David John Potter

14 September 1938 – 13th November 2017

Husband of Elizabeth, father of Jane, Andrew and Emma. Grandfather of Aine, Triona, Donal, Lauren, Harry, George, Elsie, Spike and Ruby.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to David Potter to that dreaded disease Parkinson’s.  A very moving funeral was held at St Peters Chapel, Exeter and Devon Crematorium on Friday 24th November conducted by Martin John Nicholls with poems and eulogy from the children and grandchildren.  David left with his walking boots and flowers from the garden and his final piece of music was Kalinka by The Red Army Choir.

David joined Exmouth Photo Group in 1992 and he became a leading light within the club.  He was Chairman from 2000 to 2003; Publicity Officer, ran a print group, and instigated the Millennium Project where all members from the club took photos over the whole of Exmouth.  Also, he and his beloved wife Liz hosted our Summer BBQs from 2002 to 2005. David was a very keen darkroom worker and progressed to the “digital darkroom” very ably.  David was Deputy Head of Exmouth Comprehensive School and as a University Student studied Russian.  He was an avid walker, loved his hobby of growing cacti plus growing produce on his two allotments.

Gavin Hoey Day at Clyst St Mary - 10 June 2017

It's thanks to Ian and the rest of the Committee for arranging such a great day, everything went well and all our 100 plus visitors seemed to enjoy the day. I was getting comments like, "I love the live demonstrations" ; "what a marvelleous day"; "well, I've certainly learnt a lot from the day"; etc etc. I have put on a separate page images from the day kindly taken by Christine Chittock, she done a grand job. Please click here to view.

But I really must congratulate Jenny and her team Diane, Beate, Sarah and Derrick for such a slick operation in the kitchen supplying refreshments and lunches for so many of the visitors. I have put up a couple of images showing them at work. Of course there are many other members who helped with setting up the screen and equipment plus of course the team on the desk.

Not only did we have Gavin and his wife Sam giving us such a good show, we also had a "club model" namely Chaz who performed well in his role as Knight & Farmer. Fotospeed was also invited and his stand was really busy.

Exmouth Art Trail

To celebrate the Exmouth Festival and their Art Trail some members of the club have contributed images to put on display. It is thanks to Ian and his team that we now have an exhibition of our work in the upstairs room of the Holy Trinity Church. Go take a look plus there is lots of other arty stuff on display.

Suffolk Trip - May 2017

I have heard the group at a really good time in Suffolk some of which now belong to the "AB" Group - as Stella so aptly puts it "What starts out as hope (cake) soon becomes corroded into a tragedy of temptation (more cake), leaving only a sense of chaos and the prospect of a new reality (less cake).  But I won't loose hope with you all to help me along for new insights (photos) are crafted from both opaque (when using your HD filters if you haven't dropped the lens holder between 2 bounders) and transparent (no HD filter) meanings". Read what you like into that lot!!!!

AGM 26 April 2017

The AGM took place for the first half hour of the evening then the Chairman's Challenge AV were shown. Unfortunately one of the AVs was missed out so it will not be until our next meeting in September before we get the results as this AV will be shown that evening. Deirdre Jennings thanked the Committee for the work they have done for the club over the last season and thanked Trevor as outgoing Chairman for his term as Chairman.

The Devon Clubs' Battle prints and digital images were shown to club members; this competition to take place on the 13th May at Newton Abbot.

Then came the Presentation of Awards for the Monthly and Panels Competition plus the Chairman's Shield. Trevor was pleased to announce that Derrick Holliday was to be presented with this award as he had done so much for the club over the last year, in particular making print stands and of course all his hard work as print competition secretary, getting the judges being the most difficult part. Below images (by courtesy of Maurice) of members receiving their awards from our President John Perriam.

Summer Programme

There will be a Summer Programme this year but we are asking members to suggest ideas for walks or photographic events. The programme is in the process of being put together but we are asking members to organise the walks and events themselves. Perhaps you can think of somewhere to have a short walk and then a pub after for a Wednesday evening with the idea of perhaps taking a camera and getting some shots. Or if you have any ideas for a Sunday outing then please add it to the programme that Mo will present to the Club each week.

A La Ronde Exhibition

We are holding an exhibition of member's work in the Stable and Tea Room at A la Ronde from Saturday 6th May to Friday 19th May. Members are asked to supply framed prints which can be small and work will be for sale if the member agrees. Entry to the Exhibition is free for National Trust Members and Exhibitors. Speak to Mo for more information.

Recent successes for our Club

Bridgend 5-8 Photo Harmony AV Competition

With the encouragement of Ian several members entered the Bridgend 5-8 Competition and results are out. I am delighted to say Ian won the competition with The Fallen and Christine Chittock had a Highly commended with her Kaleidoscopic Stourhead. Well done to both of you. WCPF Members Exhibition

I am so pleased that 10 members entered the WCPF Members Exhibition this year with several successes and some awards which amounted to 2 Gold Medals, 1 Bronze Medal, 1 Ribbon and 3 H/Commendeds, well done to those members. Below a table of entrants and theirs acceptances and awards.

I was also lucky enough to gain the Margaret Aven Trophy for the second year running with my 13 acceptances, only by 1 acceptance though so will have to do better next year!!

Please visit the Members Exhibition which is to be held at a new venue this year; Bovey Tracy Golf Club from 29th April to 13th May. Opening day and awards ceremony to be held on the 29th April.

WCPF DPI Competition

The competition was held at The Corn Exchange, Exeter on Sunday 5 February 2017 and yet again a successful event for Exmouth. The judges were Jan Cawley EFIAP/s (Welsh Federation) Gary Shinner EPSA LRPS EFIAP/b AWPF (Welsh Federation) Alison Cawley ARPS DPAGB AFIAP (Southern Federation).

This year we came joint 6th with 194 points. With 56 clubs who entered I think we did very well. They will represent the WCPF at Warwick for the PAGB Inter-Club DPI Competition in July. 3rd place with 204 points was Bristol, 4th place with 200 was Nonpareil, 5th with 195 points Newton Abbot.
